It was built by the Ahom king Suklenmung (Gargoyaan Rojaa) in 1540.

king Rajeswar Singha

It is the largest of the monument built during the Ahom era. King Rudra Singha was responsible for the construction of Kareng Ghar, but the present structure was built by king Rajeswar Singha (Surempha). It was initially built as an army base. It had 2 tunnels and 3 underground floors.

Karenghar and Talatarghar is the largest monument of the Ahom Kingdom which was built under the leadership of King Rudra Singha during the period from 1696 to 1714. It is a seven storeys palace, three of which is under the surface and is called the Talatalghar while rest four storeys, Karenghar is above the surface.
