The Puthimari river originates from the Himalayan ranges of Bhutan near latitude 27016’N and longitude of 91048’E at an altitude of 3750 m MSL. The river Puthimari flows in a north-south direction for 74 km up to 26050’N in Bhutan. The river Puthimari is known as the Ooantang river and traverses 8 km from its origin.

The river is known as the Tsangpo in Tibet (China), the Siang or Dehang in Arunachal Pradesh, the Brahmaputra in Assam and the Jamuna in Bangladesh.
