Anandaram Dhekial Phukan (Assamese: আনন্দৰাম ঢেকিয়াল ফুকন; 1829–1859) was one of the pioneers of Assamese literature in the Orunodoi era who joined in the literary revolution initiated by missionaries. He was remembered for his efforts in promoting the Assamese language.

The pioneer of modern Assamese literature is Lakshminath Bezbaroa. Born on 14th March 1864 in Sadiya, Assam, Bezbaroa is regarded as the father of modern Assamese literature due to his immense contributions in various literary genres such as poetry, fiction, drama, and journalism.

In his application to Moffat Mills, the judge of the Sadar Court, Calcutta, Anandaram Dhekial Phukan, one of the pioneers of Assamese literature, stated that in 1851 the conditions of people in some areas of Kamrup and Darrang was such that parents were even forced to sell their own children for some grains.

Bezbaroa was the pioneer short story writer in Assam. His short stories covered the different features from the Assamese society but with humorous sentiment. Rasaraj Bezbaroa was earmarked as a patriotic playwright while he composed three historical plays, namely- Chakradhaj Singha, Joymoti Konwori and Belimaar.

Piyoli Phukan was one of the earliest Assamese leaders to raise voice against Britsh rule. He was hanged by British in 1830 after he was found guilty of masterminding a conspiracy to drive away the British from Assam.

novel Bhanumati

The novel Bhanumati or ‘Bhanumoti’, published in 1890 is the first Assamese novel. From literary point of view it is regarded as the first Assamese novel.

Probably the earliest text in a language that is incontestably Assamese is the Prahlada Charitra of the late 13th-century poet Hema Saraswati.

Bhanumati Talukdar, a resident of the Kamrup district in the state was a notable female freedom fighter who made illustrious contributions to the struggle in the region. Bhanumati Talukdar hailed from the Godebori Village of Kamrup.

Nathan Brown

Amidst this loss of status the American Baptist Mission (ABM) established a press in Sibsagar in 1846 leading to publications of an Assamese periodical (Orunodoi), the first Assamese grammar by Nathan Brown (1846), and the first Assamese-English dictionary by Miles Bronson (1863).
